NBC is getting ready to put pen to paper on a revival of The Office.
Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the Peacock network is eyeing a continuation of the beloved workplace comedy for the 2018-2019 season. The revival would once again be set at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, PA., branch, and feature a mix of new and old cast members. Steve Carell, who starred as the branch’s regional manager, Michael Scott, for seven of the comedy’s nine seasons, will not be involved in the new series. The search for a new RM/boss is said to be already underway.
NBC declined to comment on or confirm any details of this story.
Roughly a month before NBC’s successful relaunch of Will & Grace, network president Bob Greenblatt revealed to reporters that his revival wish list included The Office (as well as 30 Rock). “We often talk about The Office,” the exec told our sister site Deadline. “I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it.”
NBC’s Will & Grace revival has been a critical and commercial success for the network. Last week, the sitcom even landed multiple Golden Globe nominations (including for Best Comedy Series).
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE GOD NO
Right you are!!!
NO, I’d Love to see this happen…why so down on The Office?? Maybe they can talk Jerry Seinfeld into a13 season return :)
I think John036 is repeating a line from the show by Michael (played by Steve Carell).
If Steve Carrell isn’t involved, don’t do it.
*Carell
Amen he totally made the show
THIS!!!!
Agreed… Michael Scott or BUST
he isnt
It is not “The Office” Without him, he was the magic behind the show.
he was gone the last several years of it, except for a final get together at the end, it’s fine without him, dont comment unless you’ve actually watched the darn show
There’s a difference between ”good” and ”fine”.
That’s an opinion
This is very unnecessary.
That’s what she said…..
Omg hahaha! I still say this!
In order to do it, they would have to re-invent it. The mockumentary style wrapped up at the end of the show.
Oh, that would be easy enough to fix. The doc crew wants to do a sequel or a continuation
Or they could do it from the perspective of a different branch.
It wouldn’t be the same
true but seasons 8-9 the did fine with out Carell, Dwight IS MANDATORY though.
Agreed. Don’t Shoot w/o Schrute!!!
Ugh, no! It outlived itself the first time and its too soon to bring it back again. Enough revivals, NBC!
I agree. Way too soon. I need some time to miss it first.
*that one Michael gif where he keeps saying no*
Give it another 5 years, NBC. Please and thank you
Yeah, way too soon after it ended for a revival
Have the creative minds become that sterile that they cannot come up with any new, topical, and funny shows to engage our minds and amuse our sense of humor?
Creative ideas that investors will buy into are hard to come by… too much content has flooded our screens…. and every new ideas is too similar to others on the market…. investors are playing it safe at this point.
That’s funny, considering the “original” was a re-make . . .
A remake by the same producer, Ricky Gervais, he originally produced the English version of the office which he felt did poorly and so he decided to try it in the american market.
What are you talking about? It’s the most successful British sitcom ever.
Shhhhh… stop trying to use logic. People in this discussion like to pretend they understand the entertainment industry.
It is?? Then why only the 2 seasons??
Thanks for this tidbit
Other than the British Jim being in love with British Pam and the couple’s names being almost the same, I believe the Brit version was completely different than ours.
Yeah, I always mix up the names Dawn and Pam.
What?? It’s like the same show bro… Even had a scene almost word for word and shot for shot in the US version (first time Jim pranked Dwight with the stapler in hello prank) I mean come on, the only similarity is the love connection? Bro learn to compare lol
Two and a half years late but: these two are completely different even if they did have some similarities. The tone, the humor, the characters and their development.
The mere fact that the Brit version was twelve episodes and two specials vs. NINE SEASONS of the American version means it’d be impossible to be carbon copies.
How’s that for comparing?
A group of characters in an office was never an original idea. The execution is what made that show good… Until it wasn’t.
If they are going to have a new cast, they should have a new setting, so it feels like a natural break and not a second-rate revival.
Still, I’d rather see a Friends Thanksgiving episode than a whole Office revival.
Is there no other British shows we can copy?
We have made several attempts at this and almost all of them end up flopping
It is not “The Office” Without him, he was the magic behind the show.
Hopefully someone will start a petition to prevent this idea from going any further, I’ll happily sign.
I agree.
Nope, it’s too soon.
Horrible idea.
Does anybody at NBC understand WHY Will and Grace has worked? Apparently not. It has worked because the gang is all there. What is the point without Carell? I understand why he wouldn’t want to do it but really the last years of this show stunk without Carell. Please NBC don’t do it
First of all, it’s too soon. Second, the last couple of seasons were just ok, not close to the highs of the show’s glory years. I’d rather they just leave it alone.
Just no. Why is this necessary? I love the Office but it also had one of the best and most satisfying series finales and I have no interest in it being ruined. Everyone would have to come back for it to work and that includes Michael.
NOOOOOOO! It ended perfectly! Don’t mess with it!
The last season was awful and I hated how they villainized Andy and destroyed him & Erin. No thank you.
Ansy was gay… it was never going to work with Erin.
I could not agree more Andy and a Erin’s realationship was real not some couple like Roy and Pam that was meant to be Brocken up
I wish NBC and whoever’s in charge could see all the above comments, 100% of them saying “it’s a terrible idea” and “don’t do it” in many different forms. I subscribe to them.
Will and Grace sort of made sense as a show to bring back.
The Office? That’s a TERRIBLE IDEA. That show was driven into the ground. No need whatsoever for more episodes, EVER, EVER, EVER.
I was never really a fan, but I’m not surprised. The show is still popular. I hear about people binging it on Netflix all the time. It will be interesting to see though how it will rate for new broadcast episodes.
Holy j.h.c, stop with the revivals. It’s such a lazy way out for content. Not to mention after Steve Carrell left, the series kinda meandered about. I am a big fan of The Office but it’s way too soon.
Not way too soon, just a bad idea no matter what spin you put on it
Funny that you guys are late to the fake news party.
Too bad you didn’t stick around till March.
I don’t think John Krasinski would come back for this either, and this show would be lost without Jim & Pam. Same with Mindy Kaling – she’s starting to build her movie career and is producing tv shows. Like others have said, what has made the W&G revival (and the upcoming Roseanne revival) so special is they got all the main players back. Even John Goodman is coming back, and that dude does a couple of movies a year (as well as blockbuster movies). I just don’t see it without the original crew.
Mindy Kaling has said recently that she would come back.
Calling this The Office is a bit of a reach? Steve Carell, John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling, among others, won’t be involved.
Why not just make a spinoff with Dwight running his own comedy? With the success of The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, it looks like the last hope for broadcast network sitcoms is the quirky character being the lead, not the supporting act.
Then you can have all his former coworkers stop by on guest appearances.
I would rather see a SCRUBs revival
or M.A.S.H
No, don’t touch Scrubs. They already drove it to the ground with season 9.
With a good cast, it can work. It doesn’t need to be the same cast as in the original, just worthy successors. A revival does not need to be beholden to its predecessor (think Star Trek: The Next Generation), it can carve its own path. While the actors in the original American version are well-known today, they weren’t household names when the first season aired (I think I recall several sites hating the show, calling it a failure, and expecting it to be swiftly cancelled, etc, etc). New actors might surprise people and become audience favorites in their own right.
I suddenly got the crazy idea of Jaleel White as the lead…
