The classic religious film Black Narcissus is being reimagined by the BBC as a sexy TV drama.

BBC One is working with Amanda Coe – writer of breakout hit Apple Tree Yard – on adapting novelist Rumer Godden's tale of forbidden love, religious devotion and supernatural phenomenon into a three-part drama series.

The series will follow Sister Clodagh and her House of Women to remote Nepal where they hope to better the lives of the locals – but the journey awakens feelings within Sister Clodagh that she'd long repressed.

Finding herself uncontrollably drawn to troubled land agent Mr. Dean, Sister Clodagh's growing passion mirrors the tragic fate of doomed love that once unfolded for the long-deceased Nepalese princess Srimati.

"I'm thrilled to be adapting Black Narcissus for BBC One," Amanda Coe said today (May 4). "It's a truly extraordinary love story, as well as a brilliantly unsettling piece of 20th century gothic about the power of a place to get under your skin and the dangers of refusing to learn from history."

Black Narcissus was, of course, previously adapted into a classic big-screen drama by the legendary filmmaking team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Powell and Pressburger's version of Black Narcissus won two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. Today, it's cited as a groundbreaking landmark of the post-World War II era of British film.

BBC One also has exciting adaptations of The War of the Worlds and Little Women in the works, as well as ex-Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies's miniseries A Very English Scandal.
